Supportive Therapy
At Innate Wisdom Psychiatry & Wellness, we offer more than medication management—we treat the whole person. That includes offering supportive therapy as part of our integrative mental health care model. We combine supportive therapy with psychiatric medications, evidence-based supplements, lifestyle changes, and mindfulness and somatic techniques to help you feel more grounded, empowered, and connected to your healing process.
It’s important to note that supportive therapy is offered within the context of medication management sessions. While we do not serve as your primary therapist, we provide therapeutic guidance during our sessions that complements your broader treatment goals. If you already work with a therapist, we are happy to collaborate—offering a team-based approach to your care that enhances communication and consistency across providers.
Supportive therapy is a structured, yet flexible, therapeutic approach that is grounded in empathy, respect, collaboration, and unconditional positive regard. It’s particularly beneficial for individuals navigating:
Emotional overwhelm and stress
Psychiatric symptom burden (e.g., anxiety, depression, mood instability)
Major life transitions
Relationship difficulties
Grief or loss
Low self-esteem or self-doubt
Supportive therapy aims to create a safe environment for self-exploration and personal growth, focusing on helping you stabilize in the present moment, cope with stressors more effectively, and feel supported in your day-to-day experiences.
What Is Supportive Therapy?
How Supportive Therapy Helps
In our sessions, we aim to cultivate a compassionate and nonjudgmental space where you feel safe to express yourself. This therapeutic support is designed to help you:
Develop the tools to navigate difficult emotions with greater clarity and strength
Build emotional resilience
Recognize and reinforce your inner strengths and capabilities
Improve self-esteem and confidence
Identify what helps and what hinders your mental health, then work together to strengthen helpful patterns
Enhance coping strategies
Gain perspective on your thoughts, behaviors, and emotional responses
Promote insight and self-awareness
Know that someone is in your corner, listening and supporting you as you move through challenges
Feel less alone
While supportive therapy does not replace in-depth psychotherapy, it can be a valuable space for reflection, encouragement, and growth—especially when woven into a holistic treatment plan.
If you're already in therapy or are interested in starting, we can serve as a supportive clinical partner. With your permission, we’ll coordinate care with your therapist to align goals, share insights, and ensure your treatment is as cohesive and comprehensive as possible.
Benefits of coordinated care may include:
Collaborative Care with Your Therapist
Streamlined communication between providers
Shared understanding of treatment goals and challenges
Enhanced continuity and effectiveness of care
Better support for complex or layered mental health needs
If you’re not currently working with a therapist, we can also offer referrals to trusted providers.

What to Expect in a Supportive Therapy Session
During medication management sessions, supportive therapy may include:
Open discussion of current stressors or emotional struggles
Gentle exploration of your mental health symptoms and their impact
Encouragement, validation, and compassionate listening
Simple tools or strategies to help regulate mood or anxiety
Collaborative problem-solving to address barriers in daily life
A focus on strengths, values, and personal agency
The goal is not to "fix" you, but to support you in finding steadiness, meaning, and momentum in your healing journey.
Common Topics in Supportive Therapy
Here are two examples of what a client might bring to supportive therapy during a session:
In supportive therapy, we might explore what’s contributing to this overwhelm, identify internal and external stressors, and discuss tools such as mindfulness, cognitive reframing, or changes in sleep or diet that could help reduce emotional reactivity. You’ll leave with a better understanding of what’s happening and a few manageable next steps.
Together, we can explore your values and the patterns that may be impacting your ability to set boundaries. You’ll be supported in practicing self-compassion, noticing where you already have strengths, and starting small with boundary-setting in safe relationships.
