At Innate Wisdom Psychiatry & Wellness, you’ll receive compassionate psychiatric care tailored to support your healing journey. We offer a trauma-informed approach that meets you where you are. PTSD shows up differently for everyone, which is why our care is designed to support—not disrupt—your daily life. Instead of a one-size-fits-all plan, we will create a treatment strategy that is built on trust and attuned to your needs, goals, and the strengths already present in your life.

Daniel Plastino, a licensed psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner, brings over 15 years of experience in both medicine and psychiatry. His integrative strategy blends evidence-based medication management, supplementation, somatic and mindfulness based techniques, supportive therapy, and lifestyle/behavioral recommendations. Together, you’ll co-create a path forward.

Appointments are available both in person and via telehealth, making healing more accessible no matter where you are in Colorado.

What Is PTSD?

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) is a mental health condition that can develop after experiencing or witnessing a life threatening traumatic event. It affects how the brain processes fear, stress, and memory, often long after the danger has passed.

PTSD can result from many types of trauma, including physical, sexual, or emotional abuse, accidents, combat, or witnessing violence. It’s not a sign of weakness. It’s your brain’s survival system staying switched on, even when you’re safe.

Chronic PTSD can develop from ongoing cumulative effects of traumatic events, often throughout childhood.

While PTSD is commonly associated with veterans, it affects people from all walks of life. According to the National Center for PTSD, about 6 out of every 100 Americans will experience PTSD at some point in their lives.

Early support, proper diagnosis, and the right treatment plan can make a real positive difference in your daily functioning, relationships, and overall quality of life.

Signs and Symptoms of PTSD You Shouldn’t Ignore

PTSD symptoms often show up as unwanted thoughts, emotional shifts, and physical reactions that disrupt your daily life. These symptoms can last months or years and may get worse if left untreated.

Here are some common signs of PTSD, though each person’s experience is different:

Repeated, unwanted memories, flashbacks, or nightmares

Intrusive thoughts:

Trouble sleeping, feeling jumpy, reckless behavior, easily irritated/anger, or always on edge

Hyperarousal:

Steering clear of places, people, or situations that trigger memories of the trauma

Avoidance:

Difficulty concentrating, memory problems, or distorted beliefs about oneself or others

Cognitive symptoms:

Having diminished interest in activities, difficulty experiencing positive emotions, and feeling numb, hopeless, guilty, or detached from others

Negative mood changes:

Fatigue, headaches, pain, and digestive issues can also appear due to chronic stress

Physical symptoms:

These symptoms may come and go or feel constant. If they’re interfering with your relationships, work, or sense of safety, it’s time to consider professional support.

How Psychiatric Care Can Help With PTSD

Psychiatric medication management can ease PTSD symptoms by helping regulate mood, hyperarousal, reduce re-experiencing and anxiety, and improve sleep. At Innate Wisdom Psychiatry & Wellness, we focus on building holistic treatment plans that foster progress.

You’ll also receive guidance on managing stress, building coping skills, mindfulness and somatic strategies, and understanding the neurobiology of trauma to empower your recovery.

While we don’t provide standalone talk therapy, we often collaborate closely with trauma-informed therapists who specialize in PTSD therapies like EMDR and others, to make sure your care is aligned. If you're not currently in therapy, we can help connect you with someone who’s a good fit.

Medications commonly used to treat the core symptoms of  PTSD  (re-experiencing, avoidance, hyperarousal, nightmares) as well as co-occurring symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and ruminations include:

Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors (SSRI’s) like Sertraline, Paroxetine, and Fluoxetine

Serotonin Norepinephrine Reuptake Inhibitors (SNRI’s) like Venlafaxine.

Mood Stabilizers, Atypicals, other medications such as Lamotrigine, Topiramate, Aripiprazole, Quetiapine, Mirtazapine, or Bupropion

Alpha blockers like Prazosin or Trazodone

Supplements such as Lavender Oil (Silexan),  N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC), and omega-3 fatty acids (fish oil)

We take time to understand your history, current symptoms, and goals before recommending any medication. Follow-up visits are built into your care plan, so we can track your progress and make changes when needed.

Exploring Ketamine as a Treatment for PTSD

Ketamine may help reduce PTSD symptoms in individuals who haven’t found relief through traditional approaches. At Innate Wisdom, we offer evaluations and prescribing for patients who want to explore ketamine-assisted psychotherapy with their therapist.

This option is often considered when PTSD symptoms remain intense or unmanageable despite multiple trials of medication and therapy.

Ketamine works differently from standard antidepressants. It may help reset certain brain patterns tied to trauma and mood regulation. We collaborate closely with outside therapists experienced in ketamine therapy. If you’re not already working with a therapist, our referral network can connect you with trusted providers to guide your healing journey.

30-Minute Follow-Up Visits

These check-ins help track progress, adjust medications if needed, and talk through what’s working or not.

4

Flexible Scheduling

We offer both in-person and telehealth visits to make mental health care more convenient for you.

You’ll never feel rushed. We believe in steady, consistent care that fits your pace.
